Belgium

Grades 5+

Belgium could easily be two countries. That’s how different Belgium’s two main parts are from each other.

The Flemish – the people of northern Belgium – speak Dutch, since that part of Belgium is next to the Netherlands. Flanders has a lot of industry and is more densely populated. It is a relatively wealthy region. Wallonia is Belgium’s southern region. The Walloons are a rural people. They speak French and identify with French culture. Between those regions, and resembling a knot, is Brussels, the nation’s capital. It is a blend of the two regions.

For much of Belgium’s history, the two groups often could not agree on things. Except for ….

Beer!

Belgians are known for their love of beer, a tradition that goes back at least to Roman times. There are many famous Belgian beers that both groups of Belgians enjoy. On average, each Belgian drinks 68 litres of beer annually; a hundred years ago, that was 200!  Popular brands include Lambic, Belgian Blonde Ale, and Chimay Red, which is produced by Trappist monks. Almost every beer producer has its own branded glass, which often is uniquely shaped.

Chocolate!

Belgium is home to some of the best chocolate in the world, a tradition dating back to the early 1800s. Made with high-quality cocoa beans, Belgian chocolate is known for its rich flavor and smooth texture. The country’s famous chocolate brands include Godiva, Leonidas, and Neuhaus.

Waffles!

Belgians have been perfecting the art of waffle-making for centuries. What makes Belgian waffles so special? First, they are made with a light and fluffy batter cooked to perfection. Second, they are served with a variety of sweet toppings, such as whipped cream, chocolate, and fruit. Delicious!

And best of all …

Relax in the spa in Spa – the name of the town is where the word comes from – then head into the quaint downtown to experience a pure Belgian delight: beer, chocolate, and waffles at the same time. The beer is refreshing, the chocolate rich and creamy, the waffles light and fluffy. A perfect combination of sweet and savory.
